Happy National Golden Retriever Day! This beloved breed has the reputation of being the perfect family dog —and for good reason. Goldens are friendly, funny, patient, smart and eager to please. They also require lots of love, plenty of exercise and some basic obedience training.
Before getting a golden retriever or any type of dog, you should do your research. Different breeds have different temperaments and needs that may or may not suit your lifestyle. The American Kennel Club is a good place to start your search, and talking to other dog owners can be quite helpful as well.
There are many breeds — including mixed breeds, of course — that make wonderful pets for different people. That said, are golden retrievers still the best family dog? Let's look at both sides of the argument.
The Case For Goldens
Whether a dog is "good" with kids has a lot to do with the dog's upbringing and the child's behavior. Any scenario involving animals and children should be evaluated for safety, because you can't always know what a dog has been through or how it might react to even a calm, respectful child.
That said, golden retrievers do often have a golden personality that lends itself to playing well with little ones. They're enthusiastic yet gentle, funny, tolerant and irresistibly cute. It's no wonder the golden is the No. 3 most popular pooch in the country, according to the AKC.
The Cast Against Goldens
Put down the pitchforks! Golden retrievers are great, but they aren't the only type of pooch that can fit fantastically into a family. PetMD cites bulldogs, beagles, bull terriers and Newfoundlands as being typically great with kids, and that's by no means a comprehensive list.
As Petfinder puts it, you really "can't go wrong with a dog that has a gentle demeanor, friendly attitude, trainable nature and an ability to keep up with your family." And that dog can belong to many (or multiple!) breeds.
The Conclusion?
The best family dog is the one your family adores. It may, indeed, be a golden retriever — or perhaps it's a mystery mutt. All are wonderful, and all deserve to be celebrated. Here are a few of our favorite finds for doggone great dogs and the people who love them.

#4 Chico Creek Signs "Rescued Is My Favorite Breed" Sign
If you adopted your family's furry best friend, this rustic 8-by-8-inch sign is for you. It's made of high-grade Baltic birch plywood, and its sweet message is printed directly on the wood in a way that won't chip, peel or fade over time.
#5 FurZapper
If your pup sheds, you need a FurZapper ASAP. Just pop this reusable disk into the washer or dryer so it can lift all the pet hair from your laundry. When you're finished with a load, simply wipe the FurZapper clean, and it's ready to use again.
#6 Zesty Paws Calming Bites for Dogs
If your dog gets anxious, these bite-sized treats may help calm it down. Each canine chew contains 30 milligrams of Suntheanine, a pure form of L-theanine that helps promote relaxation. It contains organic hemp, kelp, Valerian root and chamomile — all of which can help your dog relax without making it feel drowsy. As with any pet product, Zesty Paws calming chews should be given only as instructed; and if your pooch's condition worsens or does not improve, stop administrating and consult your veterinarian.
#7 Outward Hound Hide-A-Squirrel Puzzle Plush
This plush dog toy doubles as an interactive game you can play with your dog. Stuff the toy squirrels (included) in the trunk, and place it on the floor for your pup to sniff and hunt for the sneaky squirrels hiding inside. You can also play a rousing game of fetch with the removable squirrels. Multiple sizes are available.
